What this statement covers
This statement explains how your responses to The Regulation Compass Baseline Screener may be collected, stored, used, and shared. Please read it carefully before deciding whether to consent. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you can complete the screener without consenting to your data being used for research or evaluation purposes.
Who is collecting this information
The Regulation Compass is operated by Jesse Diggins, Educational and Developmental Psychologist. Data collected through this screener is managed by Jesse Diggins as the data custodian. Contact details are at the bottom of this statement.
What information is being collected
If you consent, the following information is collected and stored:
Your name (as you have provided it)
Your email address
The date you complete the screener
Your responses to each item across the three scales (the Child's Challenging Behaviour Questionnaire, the Parental Stress Scale, and the WHO-5 Wellbeing Index)
The calculated total scores for each scale
The version of this consent statement that was active at the time of your submission
No additional information is collected. Your IP address, device information, or browsing behaviour is not stored.
Why this information is being collected
Your responses may be used for the following purposes:
Internal evaluation of The Regulation Compass. Your responses help us understand whether the course is producing the changes it aims to produce. This includes comparing your baseline scores to any follow-up scores you complete during or after the course, and looking at patterns across all participants to identify which aspects of the course are most effective.
External research, publication, or presentation. Your de-identified responses may be analysed alongside data from other participants and presented at academic or professional conferences, published in journals, or shared with research collaborators including academic institutions. Any external use will involve de-identification of the data before it is shared or published.
Improvement of the screener itself. Aggregate patterns in responses may be used to refine the screener, the course content, or the framework that underlies them.
How your data is stored and protected
Your responses are stored in a secure cloud-based spreadsheet accessible only to Jesse Diggins. The storage system uses standard commercial encryption in transit and at rest. Access is protected by multi-factor authentication.
While your email and name are stored alongside your responses (to enable comparison across time points), these identifying details will be removed before any data is used for external research, publication, or sharing with collaborators.
We retain the right to upgrade the data storage system over time as the volume of data grows or as better tools become available. Any migration will preserve the same standards of access control and security described here.
How long your data is kept
Your responses are kept for a minimum of seven years from the date of submission, in line with standard research data retention practice in Australia. After this period, data may be retained for longer if it forms part of an active research dataset, or destroyed if it is no longer being used.
Identifiability and de-identification
Your data is initially identifiable because it is linked to your email address. This is necessary so that responses can be matched across time points (for example, comparing a baseline submission to a follow-up six months later).
When data is used for external research, publication, or sharing with collaborators, your name and email address are removed before the data is analysed or shared. After de-identification, your responses cannot be linked back to you by any external party. However, while the data is stored in its original form for the purposes described above, re-identification by the data custodian remains theoretically possible.
Sharing with third parties
De-identified data may be shared with academic research collaborators or institutions in the context of formal research projects. Identifiable data is not shared with any third party except where required by law (for example, by court order).
Your data will never be sold, transferred to commercial third parties for marketing, or used to contact you for purposes other than those described in this statement.
Your rights
Voluntary participation. Your participation in research and evaluation is entirely voluntary. You can complete the screener and receive your results without consenting to your data being used for research or evaluation purposes.
Withdrawal. You may withdraw your consent at any time and request that your data be removed from the dataset. To do so, please email the contact address below with your name and the email address you used when completing the screener. Your data will be removed within 28 days of your request.
Withdrawal of already-published data is not possible. Once data has been included in an external publication or presentation in de-identified form, it cannot be retrospectively removed from that published work. However, any further use of your data will cease.
Access to your data. You may request a copy of the data held about you at any time by emailing the contact address below.
What happens if you decline
You can complete the screener and receive your full results without consenting to your data being used for research or evaluation. Declining consent does not affect your ability to access any other aspect of The Regulation Compass.
Ethics oversight
This data collection has not been pre-approved by a Human Research Ethics Committee. The collection has been designed to align with the principles of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023). If data is later used for formal research, ethics approval may be sought retrospectively from an appropriate Human Research Ethics Committee.
Updates to this statement
If this statement is updated, the version number and date at the top of the document will change. Participants who consented to a previous version will continue to be governed by the version they originally agreed to. New consent will be sought from existing participants only if the changes materially expand the use of their data.
